In Other Words

In Other Words is a handcrafted music box that explores three styles of jazz: swing, cool, and fusion. While swing and cool represent traditional eras of the genre, fusion incorporates songs from contemporary popular music that isn’t necessarily labeled as jazz, but created by artists deeply influenced by it.

Named after the classic jazz standard Fly Me to the Moon (originally titled In Other Words), this box is a nod to how jazz speaks in its own language: through feeling, rhythm, and improvisation.

The design reimagines how jazz is usually visually expressed. While the genre is often associated with bold, colorful visuals and album covers, In Other Words strips that aways and asks: can design still move you without color? Like jazz broke the norms of popular music at the time, this project experiments with spontaneity to create a visual identity that is both expressive and unexpected.
